At the end of last year, we were delighted to welcome back Old Andrean and Gawura graduates, Sonny Green (OA2012) and Sadie Green (OA2021), who were commissioned to create and paint an Indigenous mural for our rooftop based around the stories of Gawura and St Andrew’s Cathedral School, and encompassing the Gadigal land on which we live and work. 

The mural was designed as two artworks that work together. Both halves reflect journeys and are linked by kangaroo tracks and the flow of water, representing the learning journey and the flow of knowledge. 

One half depicts the traditional animals of the Sydney landscape, including the kangaroo, emu, goanna. Their tracks are all moving forwards across the mural. Surrounding the animals are yams, a staple part of the Indigenous diet, along with native fauna.  

The other half in fabulous coastal blues, focuses on the journey and growth of both the SACS and Gawura communities. The footprints move from one campsite to the next, representing the journey from Gawura’s inception, to where we currently are. The smaller communities or families connect at each interval, and form part of one strong community. There are many people who have come together to strengthen, grow and celebrate the community that has been established. 

Sonny and Sadie are Gamilaroi people and their family originates from Moree and Brewarrina. As artists, they are part of the Indigenous owned and led creative studio, Original Legacy, where they create art, clothing and accessories based off their memories and experiences.
