Learning the Ropes returns for 2023
Monday, 15 May 2023

We're excited to once again be producing our biannual careers event called Learning the Ropes: in conversation with industry professionals.

The evening, which is coming up in a few short weeks, is always very well attended and hugely beneficial to students in Senior College as well as recent graduates. Students and new Old Andreans can explore a wide variety of careers by talking with professionals working in those industries.

We have secured the services of nearly 100 Old Andreans, parents and friends to come and talk about their career journeys, what work is like in different industries, and their advice on finding your feet in the workforce after school.  We sincerely thank all our volunteers who have generously given up their time to support our event.

Students and their parents will hear from a discussion panel of Old Andreans who have been out of school for around a decade. This year the panel will be facilitated by Alex Beaumann (OA2012). Attendees will then engage on a one-on-one basis with our industry professionals who come from more than 50 different industries.

A huge range of career paths and experience levels are represented. We have Old Andreans who have gone down a traditional career route, ones who have changed careers and ones who have never been to university. There are some at the beginning of their careers and some who have been working in their industry for several decades.

Students and parents will be able to chat with a journalist, a doctor, a paramedic, a civil engineer, an architect, a psychologist, a teacher, a media advisor, a flight instructor, a personal trainer and even a super yacht captain!

We also have students from all the major Sydney universities coming along to speak about their specific uni experiences to give valuable insight into each institution.
