Old Andreans at SACS – Ethan Crosweller (OA2016)

What is your role at SACS?

I’ve been given the title of Communications Assistant. I like the way my predecessor Anthony Segaert (OA2017) described the job. He used to tell other staff that he worked on the school’s social media and online editorial content, and once people’s eyebrows were sufficiently raised he’d explain: “I’m the school’s news reporter.” I like the way he put it, so when I took over from him I kept using it.

What motivated you to come back as a staff member?

I studied Arts/Media and Comms at uni and a job was going at SACS toward the end of my degree. I experienced the school as a student and it has my heart. I have a lot of love for the place. The chance to write about the school on behalf of the school seemed a nice opportunity.

When did you join SACS as a staff member?

I started in my role at the beginning of 2021.

How has being an Old Andrean affected your role here?

The school was looking to hire an Old Andrean because they knew that students ‘get’ the place. I think that’s true for me, I get it. Partly that’s because the school took its time to explain itself to me. SACS has always been clear about what it believes in. But it’s also because the school took time to understand me. Teachers took an interest. I’ve always been keen to reciprocate that interest and I bring that interest into what I do now. I try to get a deeper sense of ‘what’s in the waters’ at SACS, by that I mean the culture of the place and why it is the way it is. Being an Old Andrean and, I’d add, being a Christian, certainly makes that easier. I don’t think you can fully understand this place unless you have an eye for the beauty of Christ. He’s at the centre of SACS and I think he’s why students often have a great experience. They encounter a deeper love here that is unique in this world and desperately needed. It’s a joy to work in such a place.
