A choir of Old Andreans and soloists has stunned audiences with a captivating performance of 'One Day More' from Les Miserables at the 140 Celebration assembly earlier this month. Held in Sydney Town Hall on Monday March 3rd, the performance brought together Old Andreans from five different decades. The nine soloists – Richard Hansen (OA2003), Emma Charles (OA2007), Lucy Bailes (OA2002), Gavin Brightwell (OA2009), Greg Brown (OA1983), Richard Anderson (OA2009), Ema Franklin (OA2012), Alex Beaumann (OA2012) and Gabe Way Stamatellis (OA2024) were joined by a choir of Old Andreans and senior students, some of whom appeared in our original Les Miserables production in 2007. The piece was accompanied by Calvin Newling (OA2024) and Ms Szu Yu Chen and brought together under the baton of Hall of Honour inductee Huw Belling (OA2003). We are especially grateful to Greg Brown and Richard Anderson who took time out of their busy season as full time opera singers at Opera Australia. They generously volunteered as part of the choir, despite their busy season singing in Cendrillion, La Traviata and Candide. Musical excellence has been synonymous with St Andrew's Cathedral School since its earliest days. A St Andrew's education has formed the foundation for many professional musicians since 1885. Our School's musical tradition over 140 years makes a vital contribution to our Legacy of Light. Many of our soloists have trained internationally including at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Royal Northern College of Music. These Old Andreans have appeared on revered stages including the Sydney Opera House, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Royal Albert Hall and the Edinburgh International Festival. The chorus was made up of dozens of Old Andrean singers, all of whom have featured in St Andrew's musicals of the last five decades. This project speaks volumes to the spirit of our Old Andrean community. Several senior students had the privilege to share the stage with industry professionals – an example of how willing our Old Andrean community is to mentor younger students, helping pass the torch of musical excellence to the next generation.
